The Department of Justice has awarded the Tribal Judicial Institute at the University of North Dakota School of Law a $965,477 grant.
The grant, from the department's Bureau of Justice Assistance, is intended to support the institute's work providing technical assistance and training to tribal justice systems in the lower 48 states and Alaska.
The grant notice states that the grant will help the institute "continue to promote and support assistance to Indian tribes and Native American villages in the development of their tribal courts and traditional justice systems while preserving principles of sovereignty and government-to-government relations."
The institute began its work in 1993 as the Northern Plains Tribal Judicial Institute, providing judicial training for the tribal courts in South Dakota, North Dakota, and Minnesota.
