  • East Central Drug Court celebrates anniversary
    The East Central Judicial District Adult Drug Court in Fargo held its five-year anniversary celebration on May 9 at the Cass County Courthouse. The court thanked drug court program suppporters and recognized the accomplishments of its past and present participants.

    Six attorneys were admitted to the North Dakota bar May 6 in ceremonies at the Supreme Court: Lukas Andrud, Michelle Eichler, Rebekah Haines, Jacqueline Kalk, Laura Megan-Posch and Jeb Oehlke.
    Custody investigator/guardian ad litem training offered
    The State Bar Association and the North Dakota Supreme Court are offering orientation training for people interested in becoming a custody investigator or guardian ad litem. The training will cover the role of the custody investigator and guardian ad litem, best interest factors, domestic violence issues, visitation and parent/child contact and related custody issues.
    Local juvenile drug court showing positive results
    Williston Herald: "North Dakota Gov. John Hoeven has declared May 2008 as Drug Court Month. Williston began holding a Juvenile Drug Court program in January. Former Juvenile Supervisor Jack Colby is coordinating the program here."

    St. Paul Pioneer Press/AP: "Mildred Loving, a black woman whose challenge to Virginia's ban on interracial marriage led to a landmark Supreme Court ruling that struck down such laws nationwide, has died, her daughter said Monday."

    Minn.: Grant to be used to create domestic-abuse court
    St. Cloud Times: "A $300,000 grant will increase Stearns County's work with victims of domestic violence and improve the way it monitors offenders. The Minnesota Office of Justice Programs awarded the problem-solving grant to start a domestic violence court for repeat felony offenders."
    Minn.: Court rules against PUC in CenterPoint cost recovery case
    St. Paul Pioneer Press/AP: "The state's utilities regulator must reconsider its decision to block CenterPoint Energy from recovering $21 million from customers that it underbilled over four years, the Minnesota Court of Appeals ruled [May 6]."
